چکیده

Ahstract: In this paper we discuss the thresholding methods [1] due to Kittler and Illingworth. Two methods arc suggested in [1]. namely, 1) minimizing a criterion function and 2) iterative search of the minimum error threshold. We have tested the two methods. The first one is found to be robust even in the case of weak bimodality in the histogram. The second one is faster than the first, but a good initial threshold must be provided. We have proposed to use the method of Ridler [3] and Trussel [4] to select the initial threshold. Experimental results show that if the initial threshold is selected this way the second method is as robust as, the first one, but the speed of the whole procedure is much faster.

Unified formulation of a class of image thresholding techniques

-In this paper, we show that Otsu's image thresholding, Kittler and Illingworth's minimum error thresholding, and Huang and Wang's fuzzy thresholding methods can be derived under a similar mathematical formulation. The difference among the three methods is the choice of different weighting functions for computing a criterion function that can be considered as a weighted summation of the image g...

A Robust Thresholding Algorithm Framework based on Reconstruction and Dimensionality Reduction of the Three Dimensional Histogram

In this work, a robust thresholding algorithm framework based on reconstruction and dimensionality reduction of the three-dimensional (3-D) histogram is proposed with the consideration of the poor anti-noise performance in existing 3-D histogram-based segmentation methods due to the obviously wrong region division. Firstly, our method reconstructs the 3-D histogram based on the distribution of ...

On minimum variance thresholding

Variance-based thresholding methods could be biased from the threshold found by expert and the underlying mechanism responsible for this bias is explored in this paper. An analysis on the minimum class variance thresholding (MCVT) and the Otsu method, which minimizes the within-class variance, is carried out. It turns out that the bias for the Otsu method is due to differences in class variance...

This paper proposes a model for eliminating noise from ECG using α-trimmed thresholding. In this paper, the α-trimmed thresholding tested in the wavelet based Adaptive Filter Model. The Wavelet co-efficients at every sub-band level is made adapted by LMS algorithm to minimum mean square value and thresholded the adapted coefficients. It is shown that the proposed thresholding method offers vari...

Wavelet thresholding via MDL for natural images

We study the application of Rissanen's Principle of Minimum Description Length (MDL) to the problem of wavelet denoising and compression for natural images. After making a connection between thresholding and model selection, we derive an MDL criterion based on a Laplacian model for noiseless wavelet coe cients. We nd that this approach leads to an adaptive thresholding rule. While achieving mea...
